It used to happen about once every 6 months, but now I have had the dreaded sudden engine stall 3 times in 2 days.

The first two times I was stopped, the most recent, I was driving at speed.

I have a spare fuel pump relay, and a spare OVP....

However my OVP is one of the original types with only 1 10 amp fuse.. that has been superceded by the two fuse type.

I haven't taken any action yet... I will probably exchange the fuel pump relay tonight..and see if that takes care of the issue.

I have done the search and these two relays seem to be the source of the issue..

OH.... the only other thing is that when i go to start the engine up... the tach jumps initially, even thought the engine is just turning.

i am usually successful at getting the engine to restart in about 30 seconds or about 3-4 tries.

Could it be the electronic control of the engine management system has gone out and you are operating on the manual "limp home" backup mode?

i don't know if an 88 model has a limp home mode..

Drove it 400 miles round trip last weekend...24 mpg... engine smooth at silk at idle.

i don't want to throw parts at it... i just have a spare fuel pump relay and ovp, since these are know weak points on the 124

When this happened to my 260, it was the ignition coil. It got progressively worse over a month or two, and then just quit altogether.
