What happens to gas as it sits?

Does it turn into water? would it cause a car to burn black smoke, or would that be a sign of engine trouble?

How long has it sat? Black smoke generally means rich mixture. Old gas will cause poor running and maybe gum up your injectors.

Keeping it simple, gasoline is a lot of complex hydrocarbons and additives. Over time, they "gunk up", which is to say turn sticky, get gummy and ultimately stop not burn well and clog up things that shouldn't be clogged.

If you car is fuel injected, the gummed up junk can get things stuck open or stuck closed. Either way, the car won't run right, perhaps dumping too much gas into they cylinders (and thus burning rich).

Figure gasoline is good for about a year and becomes a liability after 2 years.

Getting parts cleaned is sometimes more than they're worth. Sometimes paying somebody else to do it iss more than the car is worth.

gas around here starts to go downhill after a month. (Minnesota) We have ethonal mixed in the gas & it dosnt store for long periods well. Seems to be more of a problem on carbs rather then fuel injection.

The gas in question is 2 years old. I started the car and let it run, and surprisingly it runs pretty good on that gas. If I give it gas though, it will blow some black smoke. It has never done this before and I just wasnt sure if thats a sign of engine trouble and I should abandon the thought of driving it again.
