Major problem with 88 190e 2.3 please help
Major problem with 88 190e 2.3 please help
Here is the problem....it wont start. the last owner had it for 8 months with no problems untill oneday he parked it at night and the next morning it wouldn't start. needless to say i got it at a good price. I have replaced the cap, rotor, and cps sensor with no luck yet. i have chased the spark to the distributor and after that there is no spark to the plugs. i inspected the distributor to find that the actual distributor shaft and rotor pretty much turns freely inside with one finger i can turn the rotor around. I pulled the distributor out and the gear looks great as does the inside gear. I feel that the rotor turning so freely causes the timming to be constantly out and that the motor is cranking over faster then the ignition timing. is there a way to make the two gears mesh more firmly ? or is my entire theroy out to lunch ? thanks all ideas would help. and yes the plugs are wet fuel is not a problem |

If I'm understanding you correctly, you can turn the rotor with the distributor installed in the engine...no? That should not be the case. There is a notch that locates the rotor onto the distributor and a mating tab inside the rotor's hole. Make sure that the rotor doesn't turn relative to the shaft. If that is ok then pull the dist out of the engine. Hold the drive gear with a suitable pair of pliers or channel locks and try to turn the rotor holding the gear still. If the rotor will turn then that is a problem. Remove the rotor and with a second pair of pliers try to turn the upper part of the shaft against the lower, if there is significant movement then replace the dist. If everything looks ok then you may have a problem with the drive gear in the engine block. The 2.3s do tend to wear out timing components. If you can rule out the distributor then I'd install it back in the car. Have a buddy hold the rotor with light to moderate pressure while you turn the engine by hand. If the rotor doesn't consistently move with the engine then there is a problem with the drive gear, most likely the sprocket that is driven by the timing chain is worn out to the point that the timing chain slips over it instead of turning it. Asuming that is what you find, you'll have to redo the timing components in the front of the engine. That is a bear of a job with the cylinder head still on the engine. Worry about that though once the diagnosis is made.

well it's not the distrib did the tests and the distrib looks good it's just not messing with the driver gear and when in turn over the engince i can see the fan while i'm cranking and it not going verry fast while the engine turns over it picks up a little speed after a few sec of cranking but not as it should in my opinion. what is the name of all the timing parts that will more then likly be in need of changing ? i've done lot's of wrenching through out my life but ner on a benz. what other models share the same motor as the 190e 2.3 or have interchangable parts ? thanks

If you're going in you should change the timing chain and tensioner, the cam gear and dist. drive gear, the tensioning rail , upper and lower guide rails. You'll need to pull the oil pan so you will need a new oil pan gasket. You should also repace the front main seal. There is a real possibility of tearing the cylinder head gasket so mercedes offers a replacement section as a repair, the part # 102 016 05 80. There is also an o-ring for the oil pump to block connection, 006 997 40 48. I thought there was an oring for the coolant passage through the timing cover but could not find it in the EPC, maybe someone that's had the front cover off one recently can chime in on that one.

How long?
I'd set aside the better part of a long day and leave a little room in the next day also. In the dark blue section at the top of the page is "Buy Parts" Fill in your make and year, then comes to specific models and go to engine mechanical section. Has every part and price you need, and even has great pictures of the parts. $100 of parts will get you free shipping and I know you will be well over a hundred.
