Sounds as if there is a problem with the grounding of the cluster. An easy check would be to make a ground lead and attach it under one of the screws holding the gauges to the cluster. If the problem goes away then you could diagnose the grounding circuits or just leave it with the aux ground. I've seen it plenty times where there was an extra non factory ground wire run for the cluster on those cars.
