Installing rebuilt transmission - fill tube cap and capacities ('93 300E)
OK, just had the transmission rebuilt and now everything is back together on this '93 300E, 2.8L - now how do I fill the thing up? It has a red "tamper proof" cap - do I just break it off? If so, what do I break? Do I automatically have to get a new cap/dipstick, or will this one work with the broken cap?
Also, what is the capacity? Thank. ryan

Service disc or repair manual....
Owners manual will work too...

It's not a tamper proof cap, just a locking cap. Just swing the red part up.

I must really be missing something here - I can not swing the red part up anywhere. I can rotate the cap, but I can get it loose???

And this is not my car - just helping out a friend. So, no manuals and I don't want to buy them for one time use...

You wont be using the serivice manual for one time use, you would most likely use for other work on thecar.

The red part just comes down and clamps on to the dipstick tube. You just have to unclamp it from the tube. Your owner's manual should have an explanation of how to do it.

Again, not my car and no owner's manual - that I can find...
Here is a picture - and for the life of me I still can't figure out how to pop this top - at least, w/o breaking it! ryan

Pivot the lock
The black plastic piece under the red cap will pivot and come up 90 degrees. Lift the cap/dipstick up.

It's already broken or it is the earlier style dipstick.
There is a hinged lift tab [ missing on that one] that you must swing up to release the locking clamp on the dipstick tube before you can lift the stick out. It is missing on your picture, so the dip should be able to lift out from the tube. Might even be the wrong dipstick, as the original were Black, not red. The pic is not clear, but see that black tab under the red cap ?? ..it is hinged to the red cap andshould pull out and up [ as Watts said, it SWINGS up and out]. Here is the Original and you can see the finger tab that is mentioned: http://catalog.peachparts.com/RenderScriptTemplate.epc?_cmd=epccat_VehicleAAA&cookieID=2FG17RJ3A2FY0OA5GL&yearid=1993%40%401993&makeid=MB%40%40MB%40%40X&modelid=300%2DE%2D003%40%40300E++2%2E8&catid=J%40%40Transmission&mode=PA&subcatid=J2024@@AT+Dipstick&source=www.peachparts.com&clientid=catalog.mercedesshop

Maybe there's a little bit of the lever left in place keeping it from unlocking - which you might be able to pry with a screwdriver. If it's the wrong dipstick you're going to want to change it anyone to make sure you're getting good fluid level readings.

OK - I got it! It's one of those "geez, you must be really stupid" things...
Anyway, thanks for all of the help. I do have one follow-up question - the oil pressure gauge is now acting up - at idle it shows 0 and kind of fluctuates with rpm's. The owner doesn't remember it doing that - is it possible that I knocked something loose somewhere??? ryan

Possible, the oil pressure sender is at the base of the oil filter housing. They do go bad and also known for having wiring problems too. If it really just went bad you may have disturbed a frail wire.
