1987 300E transmission question.....

I am having an issue with the shifting/transmission in my fairly new-to-me 87 300E.

In the morning after driving a few miles and stopping at the gas station or where ever, I cannot get the shifter to go into the Park position. It won’t go past Reverse position and while in the Reverse position the car is in neutral meaning it can move forward or backwards with out problems.

I usually have to wait several minutes and run through the shifts before I can go ahead and put it in Park.

Sometimes I leave it in Neutral go to the store and when I get back I can start the engine and put the car in Park and shift into R or D without problems.

Any ideas what may cause this?? I have had this car for a couple of weeks now and have noticed this a couple of days ago. At first I didn’t think much of it but now it’s happening every morning.

I did have a transmission cooler hose replaced a week ago by a MB indy shop.

Thanks in advance for any advice on how to fix this.

Could be the interlock with the brake pedal not working right. Unless you're not pressing on the brake when trying to shift to park.....

1987 300E transmission question.....

pawoSD,

Thanks for the info, I'll pay more attention to that next time this happens.

I saw your post on your new 300E congrats!!!!!

Looks just like mine on the outside. I like your interior better though, mine has the red/burgundy color.

Thanks again for your help!!!!

Has the fluid and filter been changed? With the car being over 10 year old, I am sure it is past the recommended interval. Servicing it now, might or might not correct the problem.

According to the CARFAX report the transmission fluid was chgd on 5/17/2005 and the car had 100376 miles on it.

I'm doing an oil chg this weekend, I'll order the transmission filter kit and do that next weekend.

Thanks
