Cool 4yrs. in barn starts but not for long.

380 sec 1982. My uncle gave it to me and now it my new baby to take care. First it would not start, but I have installed new fuel pump and filter. Spark plugs and all the fluids. Now it starts but only for a 10-20 seconds. To keep it alive I have to help with pedal and if I lower to 1000rpm. it stoles. I dont know where to start, with out going to Benz Shop. I'd love like to make it my self (with Your help if You will).
Thank You!

Check all temp sensors, make sure your idle valve isn't stuck. If the car sat for so long, fuel may have deposited varnish in any number of places. It might be one of those things you can fix by running some mystery oil through the fuel system.

Have you pulled the plugs and looked at them yet?

There are a multitude of things to check.... Was the car running well when it was put in the barn?

I have replaced sparks. I've mixed 5gal. of gas with K22 cleaner and try to run motor wile holding pedal with a screw driver, at about 1700rpm. but paint started to burn of my rear bumper, its coming out very hot. Today I have started as I normaly shoud it started great, but hole car was jumping a bit. Worked for about one minute and stoled. Next time I try to start it it will not do as a first time.
What should I look for in temp. sensors?
Where is idle valve?
Thank You! Have a great Mercedes Day!

You may want to replace your old fuel. After that long, the fuel might have contaminated....with condensation.

Number 1: Old gas and CIS do not mix. All your problems will be residing within the fuel distributor and warm up regulator. More than likely, both the warm up regulator and fuel distributor are shot.

Number 2: You cannot do anything fuel related to one of these cars without the PROPER fuel pressure gauge. Want to fix the car right? Buy a pressure gauge designed to work on CIS and see what the pressure per the Mercedes manual. CIS cars have varying pressures dependent upon ambient temperature.

Number 3: Be more precise with your wording and someone may help you. Try some diagnostics. The car is trying to talk to you. Listen to it and then post on here in such a way that we can understand it.

Good luck on your project!

Aaron

I second this. Your fuel distributor (and lines) and everything else are probably coated with gas varnish and other nastyness. A full cleaning of everything (and possibly replacement) is in order to get it running properly.

Ich spreche ein kleine Deutsch......

I took Deutsch for a couple years in college.....but haven't used it in years, so its not really "readily available" in my brain.
