I swapped a 1990 300E into my 1989 300SEL without too much trouble. I would think the 1991 would be about the same. I needed to swap the rear most sensor on top of the cylinder head; I think it’s the one for the engine management system. I also needed to remove one extra sensor on top of the head and replace it with a plug from the 1989 SEL. Additionally, the arms that hold the motor mounts on the block need to be swapped, as well as the alt, PS pump, and I think the AC compressor bracket. The 1990 also had an air-pump on it so there was a kind of idler pulley that needed to be removed. There was also a metal air line that ran from the underside outboard end of the intake manifold that ran to the air pump so I put a metal plug in the manifold hole, as the 1989 doesn’t have it. Then there’s a small pipe that also ran to the air pump from a small hole on the cylinder head by the exhaust manifold. It has a bracket and bolt that anchors it to the head. I simply stubbed the pipe and penned it over to plug it. I did it last spring, so this is what I remeber. It worked with my 1990 E swap to my 1989 SEL, so I would THINK it would work for you but I’m no expert.

No, not really feasible, the 300CE is a 104 motor with different engine management, diagnostic system, etc, etc.

'90-'92 CE has an early M104 or a M103 3.0L block with a M104 twin cam head. It uses CIS-E like the M103, not the HFM injection found in most M104. In short, it can be used but shouldn't be the first choice since some of the sensors are different and it uses a unique and expensive EZL ignition control module. Those differences would have to be sorted out.
