W124 Rear Knuckle Part Sourcing?
1994 E420
I had a mild disaster on the road to work. The right rear axle failed taking out the wheel bearing and a few other bits and pieces. At this point I need to replace the axle and the knuckle assembly but I'm not sure where to look. I sent Potomac German an email but any other suggestions? |

Did the actual knuckle (wheel carrier) get damaged or just the wheel bearing itself? The wheel bearings should be available seperate, just need access to a press or, the right tool to do it on the car(about $600). If the wheel carrier is in good shape, i dont see a reason to replace it, other than to get the whole thing all together and assembled.

My mechanic suggested I could save some time and money by getting the carrier as opposed to pressing in a new wheel bearing. Your right though, I haven't done my due diligence yet and examined the knuckle yet. From calling around it may be more practical to simply get the bearing.

wheel carrier incl bearing ran about $800 2 years ago. I had an indy replace the bearing on car for about the same, which was a helluva lot less than the Wilmington,DE dealer wanted.
The most cost effective way for a DIYer is to remove the carrier and then bring it to a machine shop to get the bearing changed, but your car is OOS, and you do a lot of work yourself. Plus, your rear wheel may need an alignment afterwards.

If you do remove the carrier and take it in for a new bearing (bearing is about $60 IIRC) also have the lower bearing/bushing on the carrier replaced, cheap and a common failure item.

I've got a right side carrier w/bearing from a 1988 300E you can have for a very reasonable price. Bearing is 10K miles old (replaced in 2006). BUT, knowing Daimler Benz, it is most likely different from the one in your V8.

I had to replace that knuckle on my '91 4matic wagon, they said it was different than the 300E and the same as a 400E, replaced it with a used 400E knuckle.
I don't know if this is useful, it was an Indy that I trusted and knew well.
