2004 CLK Soft Top Quit Operating

My 2004 CLK55 Convertible top stopped closing about 95% of the way closed. It neither opens or closes now, but the windows do drop with the top switch. There are no motor sounds. The switch lights up solid and then starts blinking after about 5 seconds. The screen display does not show any faults.

I checked the fuse, and it looks fine. Also, the system chirps when you remove it.

Is this likely to be a switch problem? Anyone know how to remove the console?

Not sure if the top operation changed in 04 (as compared to my 01), but it probably isn't as simple as a console switch.

First check if you can raise or lower the rear headrests...they act as a rollbar, comparatively speaking, to the SL-series. If you can't get them to move, the entire top operation is halted. This happened on mine once, and dealership replacement of the pump and motor (one-piece unit) was a $2700 burn in my wallet!!!

Second, there is a cable in tension that tells the system how the top is oriented, so that is knows when the operation is complete. Mine is a bick slack, and I've found that I can "coax" the top a few inches back in order to get the top down operation to finish the cycle. This is a far cheaper fix.

Again, yours might operate differently, so I can just comment on what has happened for me...
