Unhappy '95 E320 DM: code 20, CEL/ABS lights on

Need a little help to track down a recent problem. Car is 1995 E320 wagon (W124.092) with ~220K miles. I'm getting the following three codes and they appear to be related.

DM/Pin 3: 20 Vehicle speed signal not present

Pin 8: 28 VSS - open circuit

Pin 14: 9 Left rear axle vehicle speed sensor or Hall-effect speed sensor
Rear axle vehicle speed sensor from ABS control module
Rear axle vehicle speed sensor from ETS/SPS control module
Incorrect CC/ISC control module installed ETS signal

The only thing I've done recently was change out the rear diff bushings but the CEL and ABS lights didn't show up for about a week. Now after clearing codes, the CEL shows up after two start cycles and the ABS light comes on every time after moving forward.

Anyone know where I should start?

Thanks!

Sounds like an ASR car.

First thing I'd check is the OVP relay, and the LR ABS sensor (left side of diff).

Thanks...I'll check that sensor, but it doesn't have ASR.

Then it doesn't have a left rear speed sensor.

In which case, there is a single rear speed sensor, on the nose of the differential. Check that, the wires might be in bad shape, being a southern car you might have disturbed some brittle wiring when working on the bushings. It is plugged in behind the right side of the rear seatback. I don't remember the resistance to the sensor if good, but if you pull the seatback you can measure it there. I believe (but don't know) that all 124s with the 3-channel ABS (pretty much everything except ASR cars and 4matic cars) have the same rear speed sensor, you might get lucky finding a used one locally.

You want to check the VSS/Hall Efect sensor behind the Inst. Cluster.

Give fuse #5 a check first.

I think I found the problem. It's the ABS sensor wire...when I replaced the rear diff bushings, I forgot to put the ABS wire back into it's clip. It was rubbing against the flex disc which had worn thru the insulation. D'oh!

I'll update this thread after I replace the sensor. Thanks!

Yeah, rookie mistake.

Arthur, would you happen to know if the rear ABS sensor from a '90 300E would work in my '95 wagon? The only reason I ask is because I have a 300E parts car...

Just re-read your post. I hope you're right that all 3-channel 124 ABS cars use the same rear sensor...I'm going to try swapping out sensors later this week. Thanks!

Don't think so b/c the parts section does not show that to be the case........
