129 Wiper arm drive
The wiper on my '91 300SL tends to stick at various points in the cycle. I have been told that this is common on single wiper systems, and that I need to lube the eccentric mechanism at the base of the arm.
My problem is that I can't remove the plastic cover over the mechanism. There is a great article in the July/August issue of the Star Magazine that shows the cover removed by pulling two tabs, but there don't seem to be any such tabs on my 129. I'll be grateful for any suggestions. Bob Deming |

Using two hands, place fingers under plastic [6" long cover] near base and pull apart [1/8"] slightly and slide away from base. There are moulded edges about 1/2" long inside the cover. If you break it, it's about $10 from the dealer, cheeper from the junk yard.
If you're talking about the round cover, you have to take out the entire wiper assembly, that you have to do anyway to clean & lube the mechanism. |

Thanks
Thanks Bob,
I was afraid of that. I have removed the straight cover over the wiper arm shaft. I'm pretty sure the problem is in either the reciprocating mechanism under the oval shaped cover, or in the big pinion driven by the motor. It would be nice if Mercedes had made some provision for lubricating both of those without completely dismantling them. Bob Deming |
