Can one rebuild an M103 EGR valve?

My diaphragm is shot. Leaks like a sieve.

Has anyone ever replaced the diaphragm on one of these? It seems like $300 is a LOT to pay for an EGR valve period, but even worse when all that's wrong is the diaphragm.

Any help greatly appreciated.

I am about ready to part out a 260e with the 103 engine... i can give you my egr at a very reasonable price.

my car runs perfectly... however it needs a/c , tires , a fan bracket pulley, and ball joints. at 225k miles, I am going to retire this 124.

PM sent.

Still would like to know if rebuilding these is possible, though.....

Wow, I repaired a whole lot more than that when I bought mine! Why retire it? If you repair it, it could last a lot longer....

On my M103 I disabled the EGR, I removed all vacuum lines to it.

Well, that's kind of where I'm at now. However, in theory, properly running EGR will reduce combustion temperatures and possibly save a bit of fuel by reducing the effective displacement of the engine under certain conditions.....

The fact that it reduces some forms of pollution is a good thing too, I suppose......

Anyhow, I wouldn't mind having it working if inexpensive enough. If I ever go back to Illinois, I'll have to!

225K? Peanuts. On my last trip to Vienna the W211 cab had 480K km (300K miles) in 4 years. The cab driver said in his turkish German, "starke Maschine".

True, however if you disable the EGR completely you reduce teh temperature event more and save even more fuel. However if you will probably fail the smog test.

Yep, my MPG's went up by 1.5 on the fillup after I disabled it, and it seems to run better as well.

Smog test? What smog test, this is MI! No inspections of any kind!

It was bought as a spare 124 to begin with... i wound up driving it for 3 years... i am looking at a 124 convertible for my wife..and i would take her coupe.

those cars are the keepers.

Tires: 400
a/c: Compressor , evaporator ?
ball joints: 300

i do most of the repairs myself.... but it doesn't make sense putting a grand or so into a car only worth that... i can get plenty of spares for the other 124's

Typically, the diphram is not repairable. The metal shell is crimped on and the only way to 'fix' it would be to grind off the outer metal and seperate the two halves. Add high temp sealant. Then you yould have to recrimp it. I don't know how to do that.
