What is in my tranny pan?

Did a transmission fluid/filter change on my 1991 300te 4matic today, and found some funky foamy stuff in the pan. Any ideas? I can tell you that it shifts well until about 15 minutes into a drive and then 2-3 becomes quite harsh. I had hoped a new filter and fluid would help this.

foamed ATF

that looks just like foamed ATF to me - is your pickup tube going all the way down into the pan? was the level overfilled leading to foaming - foam does not transfer through the tranny as well as fluid does, hence the harsh shifting. you need to look into why it is foaming and correct that and your problem should go away.

changing the filter might help if it was really dirty and not flowing well.

Sure looks like water (antifreeze) to me. Either bypass the trans cooler in the radiator OR replace it.

Get some synthetic ATF & flush the trans.

That looks like regular old H2O. If it was anti-freeze it wouldn't separate that much. It would be kinda' like the color of tomato juice with a thinner consistency.

Yup, water in the trans, I'd replace the radiator ASAP and do a fill/flush of the trans right away. Water in trans = Death to trans!
