4-Matic...problems???

I have an offer to buy a 1999 wagon. 4-Matic! I have been 'warned' not to ever get a 4-Matic, but with no explanation. Why should I, or NOT consider a 4-Matic.
I currently own a 1989 300te...so I know about the picky rear suspension that it has, but not the 4-matic system.

The 4Matic system on the 1999 is vastly improved over that on the W124 systems.

However, if something does go wrong, repair costs are very high. The transfer case, front drive shafts, front differential are all high price items. Common problem at high mileage is slow weep in the transfer case (not a big deal if you can tolerate a small leak and you can add fluid to it) and torn CV boots (causing CV joints failure).

Overall, the system is still pretty reliable and a wonder to drive in snowy winters.

Hi,
I just picked up a '91 300 Te. Really love the feel of the 4matic better than the newer -brake-controled model, but maybe it's more reliable...

I dont mind putting in the $3000 to repair the leak, but im wondering if its bad to drive the car, and just keep my eye on the level of the fluid. How long can i do that before it causes the repair bill to be more than expected!?

Another question I have about the system is how is it linked to the suspension leveling system? Could it cause any damage to any of the suspension components?

The modern 4matic (post w124 onward) is a beast. I've been using it like crazy this past week on our C240 wagon, it can drive through pretty much anything effortlessly. You can have a lot more fun by turning off ESP so it is minimally intrusive (doesn't fully turn it off).

Mine has 0 leaks or issues at 140k miles and works flawlessly. If the time should come that it needs repair, I'll repair it. Its worth every cent in the weather around here, especially for my wife to be driving it.

My winter car is my 190d with snow tires, and it performs very well too, it just can't do some of the things the 4matic can.
