replacing distributor
How difficult is it to replace the distributor in a 1973 450SE and are there any tricky steps involved?

Other than using a timing light after it is installed it isn't any big deal. After removing cap set to TDC & check rotor alignment, Set the replacement to the same installed position. That should be close enough that engine will still start, then use the timing lamp.
