help changing primer pump

can anyone give me instructions on how to change my diesel primer pump on a 84 300D. i opened it and every time i pull the plunger up a whole bunch of diesel leaks out from the sides of the shaft, same when i push it down. i saw the pump itself is only about 4" long with flats on the bottom to accomodate a wrench. can i just replace this part or is there more to it? i saw on fast lane thatthe pump itself is about $15 but the primerpump assembly presumably including the valves etc is about $150. has any one elese had this problem.
thanks for the help.
