What are the symptoms of a broken Vacuum modulator pin on a 1990 190E 2.6??

Nobody has any idea of the symptoms of a broken vacuum modulator pin?

Depending upon how it breaks, generally random/floating shift point issues.
If in doubt, replace it, cheap and easy DIY.

Does this pin actually break on its own? How? It just sits in there...

I've broken one during removal....but I don't see how it could break while just "in" there...
