'92 190E Exhaust Replacement

Hey all, I embarked on a 1000+ mile trip the other day only to have my exhaust drop off in the middle of my trip on the expressway outside of Atlanta. I lost everything behind the catalytic and didn't want to play Frogger across 4 lanes to try to recover it. Needless to say I need to replace most of the exhaust.

I was given an Estimate from Midas for 973.02 with the bulk of that being for parts,(725.96 in all) 348.99 for the center muffler,367.99 for the rear muffler and about 10 bucks for the clamps/gaskets. I was able to find new direct OE replacement made by Bosal for a fraction of the cost, both mufflers for only 275. Is this something that if I order the parts I should be able to do myself with out a problem? Also, i'm still in the middle of my trip, if I were to buy a generic center inlet/outlet muffler would that make my car quite till I made it home to fix with the OE parts? Would It hurt the car any?

I cant stand having my car sound like this, I'm embarrassed when I drive by other Mercedes especially because I pride myself in taking care of my cars. Any words of advice are appreciated, thanks!

Glad to hear you made it home. Did you buy the Midas exhaust?

No, ended up putting on a generic muffler for the ride home. Planning on ordering the parts this week and putting it back on my self.

Sounds like a good job

Glad you made it home Curtis. Replacing that exhaust, except for having to lay under the car to do it, is about as complicated as changing a tire. Make sure that you have the car up on good wheel ramps and or jack stands, and double check that it is supported really good. Hey, I see you are from Traverse City. I was born and raised in the 30's near Kinross in Chippewa County.

I replaced the exhaust on my 300te, everything from the Cat to the back. I am assuming that the exhaust hangers are similar on the 190 as they are on the 300, it was such a bear trying to fit new exhaust hangers because the Cat had sagged with age. You may need to stretch the new hangers before putting them on the car.
