Old Style 4 matic

Hi,
I have always loved the W124 wagons. Have a 97 320E, currently not in love with it.

I've understood that I should run if somebody offers me 4matic from that era. True??
I guess question is, if I really dont care about the 4matic working correctly or at all. Do I need to worry about it not working or having to repair it??
Can I turn it off, and have it work as a 2 wheel drive, and go blistfully down the road or is it that simple??
