Window switch Light
Greetings All,
This could be a dumb question, but what the heck, it beats chasing flying parts. Is it possible to change out the light bulb in a power window switch or is switch replacement the only alternative? Got you all thinking didn't I? Charles

Not really a light bulb, they use LED's on the window switches. HAVEN'T ever seen one burnt out.

There is a thin brass strip connector on the bottom of the switch which fails due to an age/vibration crack. An easy solder job and this restored power to the LEDs on both sets of window switches on my 126 console.

Go and buy a new switch as they cost almost nothing and when I took my old one apart all the springs ,clips etc would have taken hours to put back together!!UK price was £8 =$12.

Buy one for me Hamish
Greetings Hamish,
If you can get the console window switch for an '84 300SD for $12 bucks buy me one and ship it to me. We're talking about a dual switch with a lock out here that retails for $53.50 or more. JBA I'll look at the bottom strip again but didn't notice any cracks when I had it apart. Yes, I know parts will go flying if the top is removed, that's why I asked the question Hamish. Charles

Is it on your 300 SD? The buttons on my 81 SD were worn and looked pretty crumby. I had some extras, one set from a 83 300 D, and one set from another SD. I tried installing one of the better looking sets, and the left rear window wouldn't work, I didn't want to put the bad looking ones back in and figured that the nonworking one wasn't any good any way, so I tore into it. They are very simple, easy to open up, easy to clean the nonworking points and easy to reassemble. I didn't do anything with the LED's but did notice them. Probably could replace them, do you have access to a Pull-it Yourself type wrecking yard?
If you can't find one, e-mail me and I'll send you one as a Christmas present. Ernie |

No resources close
Greetings Hamish and Ernie,
The chassis number is a 126.120 '84 300SD if you happen to run across one Hamish for cheap money let me know. Ernie I wish I had a place available that I could either go to for used parts or even a Benz dealer close would be nice. Closest dealer is 80 miles away and junk yards between here and there kind of laugh if I ask them if they have any Mercedes in their yards, that's a no down here. Phil at partshop almost has all my cars figured out by now and recognizes me when I call. Just wondering if I could get stock options seeing as they have been getting a lot of my money these last several months. Don't tell me Ernie that you have a graveyard for cars right down the street from you? I've got parts coming from Phil this week so on my next day off, next Monday I'll give the switch a look see to and determine if the wire is broke or just how the darn light is rigged up in the switch. You say you didn't have any problems putting it back together? I thought this rocker switch was spring loaded as well as a ball rolling around in there somewhere as well. Charles

No, the closest is about 40 miles away, but every once in a while I'll jump in one of my oil burners and zoom over and see what's new. At least once a month I take a trip to Sacramento on business and pay $2 at the first one of the chain and they stamp your hand and it gets me in three more on the way home. I get my exercise on that day because the European section for some reason is always way in the back. I don't know what's up...but it seems like the window switches are the first thing to go. That and what ever they get out of the center where the climate control is.
There are a couple of tiny coil springs that are in the rocker part of the switch. They put pressure on the steel balls. They never fall out, in fact there is some grease there for lubrication that holds them in place. It all falls into place pretty easily when you go to put it back together. Again e-mail me if you want me to send one. Ernie |

Do have one on hand?
Greetings Ernie,
Are you saying you have one on hand or that you maybe making a trip to your favorite salvage yard in the near future? I'll investigate mine further, but if you happen that way and find one that has the lockout as well and it's cheap enough, buy it and I'll reimburse you for it. Charles

interesting thread. I have an 83 300SD, and cleaning switches is almost as much of a necessity as washing the car. For a couple months my front left window switch light would go off and on, and if i tapped the switch i could get it to flicker. Now it has fixed itself, and i could hit it with a hammer and the light would still stay on. Go figure,
R
