Old blue just died.
The kids were saying it was having starting problems for a few days and idling rough. Today I finished an oil change and went to start her up. But instead of hearing the lifters oiling up, there was a loud clanging smashing noise. I shut it off right away.
The timing chain was last changed 130K miles ago. I'm guessing the worst happened. ![]()

Sounds like the timing chain tensioner has failed.
IF the timing chain jumped you will have a broken valve cover on the drivers side. (not good). If the chain hasn't jumped???!!! disconnect the "green" wire from the distributor at the ignition BOX & crank the engine for 20-30 seconds & see if the tensioner will pump back up.

raymr...
Take the guesswork and worry out of the equation. Get a 10mm nutdriver/socket, label your plug wires on the R (passenger side), pull the air filter housing, plug wires and undo the 4 valve cover bolts. Remove the valve cover, get a flashlight, look in at your rail guide, tensioner, rail and lining....note the color and condition. My 380 made alot of clatter the last time I let it sit for awhile before starting. It turned out that the timing chain ate through the tensioner rail and lining. 130k miles is a long interval for the guide rails, tensioner AND chain, in most cases. Sounds so far like Ol Blue is ill, not dead. |

I gave it another crank last night and it did start but chugged like on 1 cylinder. There are no new holes anywhere on the outside of the engine. My son wants to pull the valve covers and see whatever damage there is. I might spring for a new timing chain and guides to get it running again, but not a cylinder head overhaul. There are a lot of other issues, cosmetic and mechanical. Shes not as pretty as she used to be.

Drivers side on USA models is the left side. That is where the chain would jump.

Both valve covers are off. The chain is intact but there are chewed up plastic bits in the left side. At least 2 valves are bent and a cam follower was laying loose. There is a big chunk of plastic down between the chain, apparently the top section of the upper guide that snapped off.
It's dead. If anyone is interested in taking it, let me know.
