Yea I know another overheating thread!

Ok.. My 93' 300ce has been overheating. Highway speeds over 40mph it is fine. 95deg with outside temps to 93deg. In stop & go in town driving it vaires from 100 -115. Turning on the heater it goes back down fairly quickly. If I return to highway speeds it goes back down. I do not seem to have any or very little pressure at the cap. I am not loosing any coolant, oil looks clear and fine. Both of the aux fans work as they should.

I have repalced and done the following in the last month:

Coolent tank.( old one had a stress crack on the backside and was leaking)
Rad cap
upper/lower hose
Thermostate
Fan Clutch (from Pelican)
Coolant ( MB coolant with distilled water)
Serp belt
Spark plugs and boots

I question the new fan clutch as when I put it on it would only turn by hand pushing it 90 deg now a week later it will turn 180/240 deg. And I can stop it when running with one section of the paper rolled up.

The rad is clean I have blown out with air any grit and trash.

The car runs great with no other issues.

So suggestions!

The only thing you haven't replaced by the looks is the water pump. Any leaks from it or anything ?

Other things could be Airlock in the system.

Could easily be a plugged radiator.

Sorry, but I think this is normal. My '93 300CE would run in this range until I installed a Jim Forgione temp resistor that turns on the fans earlier. I took a trip from Palm Springs to Parker AZ last year in July. Outside air was 115F. I cruised at 80 mph and the coolant temp held at 110-120F I was not concerned. I had an '87 300E and a '91 190E. They all ran on the upside of 1ooF in the summer.

I also have a E420. It takes a larger radiator. Since both are 124 models, this would be an easy substitution.

If you're spending time above 100c on a regular basis, the clutch is toast. There have been a few reports from people about new fan clutches that were bad out of the box because they were stored improperly.

I agree, if your going above 100C frequently then there is something wrong. Every M103 I've driven has been between 80 and 100 including stop start.

Radiator age is in issue, because if anything other than distilled water was used the buildup and effeciency loss could be huge. Any leaks cant cause boiling. A new thermostat is always the first guess as they come bad out of the box, buy OEM there. Burp the system, dont overfill reservoir. If the fan clutch stops easy with a rolled up newspaper while running you can put new oil in it. Check on Benzworld.org. I was able to refill mine.

Good luck.

Really? The whole coolant system is pressurized specifically to avoid overheating.
