190e manual trans. shifting problem

i have an '84 190e that has become hard to get into gear(s). started with 4th, then other day almost all gears did not want to engage. after reading posts on this website; checked fluid levels- plenty in brake reservoir-pumped clutch-without car started, shift into gears fine. but started the car, put it in neutral strange sound. could it be my clutch is not disengaging completely?

Yes, just because there is fluid in the reservoir does not mean that the clutch is working correctly.

Start the car with it in first gear and see how far up you have to release the pedal before you feel any clutch engagement. If the clutch begins engaging real close to the floor, then the hydraulics need bleeding and probably further attention.

If the pedal has to be released a considerably distance before feeling engagement then the problem is transmission related.
