Is there some way to tell if a p/s pump has been rebuilt?

Hello: I purchased what's supposed to be a power steering pump for my 1990 M103 rebuilt by C & M hydraulics. The pump looks like it was physically cleaned, but that's not a big deal. Short of taking it apart, is there some way to confirm it was rebuilt and not just cleaned? Also, there's some slight inward and outward movement of the shaft. Is that normal?
