Is there some way to tell if a p/s pump has been rebuilt?
Hello: I purchased what's supposed to be a power steering pump for my 1990 M103 rebuilt by C & M hydraulics. The pump looks like it was physically cleaned, but that's not a big deal. Short of taking it apart, is there some way to confirm it was rebuilt and not just cleaned? Also, there's some slight inward and outward movement of the shaft. Is that normal?

Even taking it apart it would be difficult to tell. If it was purchased from a reputable parts supplier it should be ok. A slight amount of end play is normal.

Thanks for your reply.
It came in an old box with a C&M Hydraulics return label, but that's the only part with their name on it. I just figured the rebuilder's name would be on the pump somewhere, perhaps with a strong label attached to the reservoir. There aren't many outfits and individuals that I trust when it comes to purchasing parts. I can't tell you how many used parts I've received in original manufacturer's boxes. They put the new part on the car and the old one in the box. Then, they wind up being sold as new some time later. |

If the pump looked real clean it's probably okay. Some of the reman companies reuse the boxes. Hopefully all will be okay.
