Intermittent Cruise Control
The CC on my 84 300D turbo works sometimes but not always. It seems as if I turn it on at about 25 MPH or 40km it works well. However at higher speeds it will not cut in> Where is the first place to look?Has any one else experienced this? All replies greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Harry |

Not sure of how the exact system in your car. My 1996 E320 had issues with tire size, and as you say at low speeds it was fine.
Or I hear vaccuum leaks can cause issues ? |

Most cruise issues are caused by the cruise amp. resoldering the connections will often set thins right for a while. A small percentage are caused by a bad actuator.

I read to re-solder just the capacitors. Two are round, the rest are rectangular. If that fails, re-solder again and then do the rest.
But there is a varnish over the board making it very hard to work on. And to remove the board I read about bending the small metal tabs that bend towards the center. Once bent outwards the board will pull right down. Otherwise its a pain to remove the board and metal housing. A search will bring many tips on how to repair it.

Thanks,
I am a novice so I need to know where the amp is located and how to pull it out. Thanks again, Harry |

Its under the drivers side kick panel just to the left of the steering column. Look for a VHS tape (remember those?) size silver relay. Unplug it, then struggle for hours trying to get the ONE phillips head screw out to pull the amp. GOOD LUCK

New amp? A few hundred. Rebuilds I think run $200.
And no, you do not have to struggle for hours if you just bend the tabs back that hold it. I think four. Then it slides right down! Makes it REALLY easy to take out, solder and test.
