95 e300d tranny removal

Hello,

I began the process of removing the transmission (722.435) from my 95 e300d(w124) over the weekend. I am unable to loosen top bolt on the bell cover housing where the tranny is bolted to the engine. This is the hard to get bolt. I was able to loosen the others. I am using a 24in long extension bar and a U joint at the socket. Even with a breaker bar it just wouldn't give. I even doused it with liquid wrench but no luck. I hope it is not lock tited.

Is there any other way to get to this bolt??? I want to avoid pulling both the engine & tranny out together. Please help. Thanks

Factory def. didn't use Loctite on those bolts. Removing the engine/transmission together is sometimes easier, depending on your experience.

I would say lose the u-joint if possible. You are losing at least half of your torque through that and potential risk of rounding the bolt head with one slip.

Thumbs up

I hate that bolt but have had good luck using 2 wobble extensions so that the bolt is addressed in a straight line by the socket. Also having a length of pipe over the breaker bar allows more control over what you are doing.

With enough extensioins and the engine tipped down, I've not needed wobbles (the extensions have enough tolerance at each end).

Assuming the engine tips down enough. I didn't expect any issue in the 95 as I had done the 87 in the past. There was a rather large difference in "tilting" ability between a M103 and M104 gasser. Holding the front up gently with a jack allowed removal of the bolt and also easy line-up of the trans going back in.
