2004 E320 wagon surges at low speeds.

I have a 2004 E320 wagon with 29K on it. When the weather heats up here in Tucson (now in the 80s) it will sometimes surge a bit when I am driving it between 5-10mph, like when I am driving it around a parking lot looking for a space. Car has had all required MB services. Any ideas what could be causing this? Thanks, Desert

There's more than one possibility of course but you might want to consider the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor). It monitors the gas pedal position and tells the ECU how fast to run the engine. There should be error or adaptation codes stored but you need a scan with SDS at the dealer or well-heeled indy to check.

Good luck.

Are you talking about a surge (engine speed change) from the engine OR a shudder from the chassis when you are turning??

It sounds like the well-known "trailer hitching" complaint. The 2003 and early 04 211's were fixed by an improved version transmission control unit.

It's a change in the engine speed, kind of a stutter, does it driving streight, turning doesen't seem to have any affect. What does an "improved transmission control unit" go for installed or is this maybe a recall item ( fat chance)? .....Thanks Desert.

The issue concerns the torque converter lock-up logic. If the problem can be easily duplicated (i.e. it does it all the time), the diagnosis is pretty simple. Unfortunately, you'll need an SDS diagnostic computer. The torque converter lock-up feature can be temporarily turned off using SDS. If the problem goes away then the TC is the cause. The new ECU has modified software which affects the TC lock-up logic.

Lots of indies have SDS, so you may want to check around and see if you can find someone locally who can help you. I don't know if any of the after-market machines are capable of transmission diagnosis on MB's, but it's certainly worth checking out.

Whatever you decide, make sure you diagnose the problem before spending $$$$$!!! Best of luck.
