W 123 rear axle

My mechanic tells me I need a new right rear axle. This was quite a surprise since I have noticed no symptoms. No noises, etc. Has anyone had any experience with this? The car is a 1984 300 D Turbo. All replies greatly appreciated.

How is he diagnosing? Leaking the grease out the boot or something? Maybe he's just bored/broke...

If no noise, most likely your mech has spotted a torn boot.

If left alone, it will start making noise.....

We had a 1984 300TDt whose rear axle gave way without any warning. I suppose that the boot had been leaking and the CV joint dried out, then it just exploded while underway at speed. Quite a mess, and the car needed to be flat-bedded to the repair shop.

I would replace it if he says it's necessary. You can use a rebuilt axle to save some money, but definitely get it done.

Best Regards,
Rob
