Question Ticking Noise From Engine At All Times.

Hello,i'm new to ShopForum but i've been reviewing some of your answers to ?'s that were asked, they are very good. The problem i have with my 1985 190e, 4 cylinder 2.3L mercedes is that it makes a ticking noise when the engine is running, also it seems louder as it idles higher. I have taken it to several shops, each shop tells me something different about what it could be. I have already replaced the timing chain & the hydrualic lifters & gave it a full tune up but it still continues to make that same ticking noise.Does anyone know what it possibly might be??? I don't want to keep fixing items that aren't fixing the problems, It does get kinda costly since i have to keep sending my mercedes to a shop. I would appreciate any info on this. thanks.

If your 190 has it,take a look at your engine vibration damper shock (engine off), where it is connected at the top you may find a little slop. That may be your ticking. Pretty simple fix, use a rubber washer or something similar to stop it.

Good luck

Question

JUST AN FYI, MY MECHANIC WHO REPLACED THE LIFTERS SAID THAT ONE OF THE CAM LOBES ON THE CAMSHAFT IS WORN OUT & THIS IS WHY IT'S STILL IS CAUSING THAT TICKING NOISE. COULD THIS BE THE POSSIBLE PROBLEM?

Yes it's most probable, if everthing else has been ruled out. I'm surprised that when the lifters were replaced the cam lobes weren't inspected.

My wife has a 2000 C 280 and we noticed a ticking sound from the engine bay. We had the MB tech stop at the house, he only lives 3 blocks away, before making a full fledged appt. The ticking was perfectly normal and has to do with the flow of fuel being meterd into the engine. He put his finger on the little pump and that was it. You could fell the pump working. However, it will tick at certain times, but this I was re-assured was normal. Perhaps this could be the same with your vehicle???

a ticking story. . .

This story has nothing to do with your MB's ticking but had a similar sound in my '72 Cadillac Eldorado.

Everybody who heard it said that they could fix it: Some thought it was the brakes, so after new calipers, pads, fuild, etc. it stilled ticked. I had to pay for the two calipers, the rest was free.

The pinnacle of this story was this: a transmission shop were sure that it was the tranny, so they guaranted that if a rebuilt tranny didn't fix the problem, I'd have it for free (just for the material).

As in the other cases, I told them that I thought it was in the engine but they were adament about the source being in the tranny. I will never forget the faces of the tech and manager as the car was started. The manager was in the back seat with me while the tech was in front. As soon as the car started, there was that 'tick, tick, tick' noise. Needless to say the car had a new tranny for $150 or so.

What caused the tick??? This is the sad part. About six months later as I was driving up a very steep hill (about 3 miles), the tick turned suddenly into a crash, smash, etc. One of the connecting rod's screws was loose (that was the tick) and it continued to work itself out. Finally it fell out and that was the end of this tune! Sold the car wholsale (about $1000).

Hope your story has a much better ending!

Exclamation Annoying ticking sound...

I have a 1986 420SEL and the same thing seems to be happening to me. I've had so many people look at it and have no idea how to fix it.
I'd like to start off with the least expensive way of fixing it so please tell me where can I find the vibration damper stock?
If I went ahead with getting the lifters replaced, how much do you think that would cost?
I've been using the highest level of synthetic since she has close to 200K miles.
Any help would be very appreciative!

Thanks!
