Engine ticking noise
Hi
I need some urgent help, had my 84 300d on the highway last night and it seemed that the main belt in the engine has been cutting the oil house that goes from oil filter to radiator cage, so it caused some leak that drained most of the oil, when I reached home I found about all this and started to hear this ticking noise that wend away when I added 1 gal of oil so it is ok when idling but the sound increases with acceleration under load, is this serious, should I tow the care to shop, or it is some adjustment that was missed up because of lack of oil, thanks.

uh oh
sounds like oil starvation to some critical parts. I would be real careful about driving it until you can figure out how much damage was done. This is probably the WORST CASE situation on one of these engines. I suspect that an adjustment ain't gonna fix it. One of the first things to go during this scenario is the turbo. You need to pull the cam cover and see if there are any obvious problems. Worst case - crank bearings gone - this means an engine teardown.

Hi
I will open up cam cover tomorow to see what is going on, as for the tubro it still workes or at least I still feel it kicks in, do you think this is good news.

interesting
If you can tell that the turbo is working then yes that is good news. I suspect the ticking is in the upper end (cam/cam followers). I guess the easiest thing to do now is to check the cam bearings and insect everything real good. The other critical area is the crank bearings. If they had been destroyed I suspect you would have some drivablility issues though.
If the turbo still works then you must have NOT lost oil flow to it. Did your oil pressure ever go to 0 bar with the engine running? Watch your oil consumption.

Hi
I took it to my mechanic and he is pretty sure that the crank bearings had been destroyed and he quoted me a big sum of money just to open it up , the noise is in the front end of the engine the upper part, as for the oil pressure it never went to zero while engine running , can you give me a hint what to look for when opening the cam cover, thanks a lot

Hi
Ok, opened the oil sub pan to check for metal fragments as a result of crank bearing damage did not find any fragments expect for a very fine metal residuals is this normal or this residual should indicate to something wrong, help please

Most likely damage
Here is what I can tell you. Rarely will the crank bearings be injured by what your describing, but most likely the wrist pin bearings at the piston are. I starved a diesel once and since they are so far from the source it's only logical. It could be only one so listen close and good luck. Another note the vacuume pump is only oiled by drain back and slinging oil worth checking.

Whatever damage is done is permanant. Keep it full with oil and drive it until it won't drive anymore.
