Variable Fan Clutch Pin Mod

Has anyone done it, shortened the VFC actuator pin to get clutch to engage at lower temps and what were the results?

Jim's site suggests shortening the pin .015 to get it to kick in at about 92C rather than 102C.

Thanks - I've read a good bit on your method and the Cool Harness too but I think it just might be easier to shorten the pin if filing it down .015 throws it on at 92C. Makes sense, filing down a little more would kick it on at 90C.

If I remember right, bumping the bimetallic strip out about a 1mm with your mod gives full tilt. How much did you do or adjust it to get it to kick on at 90C?

My notes show full pin deflection to be about 0.070 or 1mm full-tilt deflection to be .039.

Tips, tricks, cheats, suggestions anyone?

Also concerned because Jim's mod is for an S class and wonder if there are any differences. I've got a 94 E320.

hmmm

The M103 FC engages at 90C, and the aux fans turn on at 105C. The E320 should be the same?

I don't know the answer to your question but what I did was pull three pins and bimetallic strips from three different E320/300s from the junk yard. All of the bimetallic strips were the same, one of the pins were shorter. Mine was the same as the other pins so I plugged in the shorter one and that seemed to work.

Not very technical I know, but my fan would spin freely and stop under pressure before. Now it runs strong enough that I can't safely stop it with my hand. Chopped up a hot dog pretty good! It's not roaring like what others say they do but it's keeping the temp under the 100C mark.
