front fender removal

i tried to remove a front fender on a 1979 450 se mercedes and found after removing all the screws that the fender has some sort of adhesive used by the manufacturer running along the fitting seam and underneath the wheel arch running the distance of the fender making it quite difficult to remove. Has anybody removed a front fender and what should i do

Sounds like the same method used on a W123...

For my W123 I used a lot of time and patience together with a Stanley knife to cut all of the sealant away. I found that the inner wings on a W123 are quite delicate so don't loose your rag and just try to yank 'em off...
