I hope they use "real" MB parts and replace all of the items that need to be replaced, not just the items that are worn out. Too many rebuilders today just replace the obvious worn stuff and external seals, and don't actually do a thorough rebuild with quality parts.

Based on their reputation, I believe they rebuild from ground up. It was on their bench for a number of days and then dyno'd.

Transmission bolted up...just got exhaust left tomorrow and its done!

Had to remove the front part of driveshaft, but took opportunity to check out the center support...not a crack on it anywhere. I did notice though that there seems to be some rubber physically on the front driveshaft (rear end of it) that has started to peel. I haven't heard of anything replaceable other than the center support bushing+bearing. I figure the rubber on the driveshaft itself is maybe just to keep dirt out of the joint?

That looks like it...seems I have none of it left intact then!

I really don't want to get it at the dealer, they'll charge me $50 for that thing...
Guess I'll keep it on the list for the future! I'll probably just pull it all off and replace the rubber + bearing for good measure. The bearing was a little dirty, so who knows.

I think it'll be fine in the interim. Thanks for the find!

MSRP $8.25 at the dealer. See if Phil can order it.

Having major trouble getting the exhaust back on -- fought with it for 2hrs before getting a nice big cut on my wrist so I'm done for today. I don't get why it won't go the extra 10"...the precats are just stuck in the tunnel towards the manifold.

Has anybody put a M103 exhaust in complete before or am I doing something wrong here?

I have the transmission in and strapped up completely. So close!!!

Help - stuck on road 722.3 no 3rd/4th gear

Are you going to turn your old one in for the core, or the junkyard one. If its yours, could you ask them to let you know what the problem was when they rebuild it, and post here?

Of course, you might not... They may call and tell you it was the secondary pump and everything else was okay :banghe:

And thank you for posting this. It gives the rest of us more confidence - I have some minor work on my 722.3 and now I'm not so intimidated. So Bravo-Zulu and sorry you still ended up spending the $$$$ but now your good to go for a LONG time.

Got it!!

I think the problem was the rear of the car wasn't high enough. I jacked the rear up higher and it went in no hassles at all!!
Car starts, wheels turn!

With the new 500E Wheels though, lug nuts are touching, so I gotta get shorter lugs before I can "drive" her, but on the stands, everything moves no leaks.

So excited

And we have success!!

Drove the car today with the shorter lugs...drives great.

I have a reasonable pull to the right, so its way out of alignment. Appointment with the dealer on Tuesday to get her aligned.

Shifting was about right along with firmness, so I don't even think I'll need to adjust anything at all. Reverse was a bit rough (engages FAST though), but I think I'll give it a few weeks worth of actual driving since everything is still brand new. I only took it for a 5min drive less than one mile.

What a bear! Congratulations! You are definitely living your tag line! I could not do that on my own so I envy your ability, analysis skills and positive persistence. Now I know you will figure out that fricken' speedo cable too! The answers always come

I guess an idler arm replacement can really throw off the alignment...I wasn't expecting it to be off this much, but what do I do know!

Just glad that everything is resolved...phew!! I will probably tear my old one open piece by piece and figure it out. Got nothing to lose! I know there is a shop local that rebuilds transmissions and has a dyno so I may just take mine apart and if I find the problem, put it back together and take it to them to dyno and make sure its good again -- then I got a spare trans again
