'96 E320 ASR Problem

I have read a few posts about people having trouble with the "limp home mode" when something goes wrong with the ASR system. My boss has a '96 E320 and several times has had the engine power cut out on him so bad the car barely moves. His servicing dealership replaced a switch near the transmission but the problem recurrs. Anyone found routine cause and a definite fix for this?
