Dropping a steering column on a 123

I need to replace the entire steering lock assembly on my 82 240D. Yes, the key still turns but the electrical switch portion is shot and the mechanical part of the lock requires allot of fiddling with the steering wheel so that the key will turn. SO, I was advised to remove the steering column to make this job easier. I tend to agree with that logic. The space is tight within the cluster area and standing on your head down by the brake pedal isn't that great either.
Looking at the FSM, disconnecting the steering shaft is easy, but how is the steering column held in place ?
