Thanks. I will get them checked out after work. I will also check oil level in the diff while it's on the lift.

I did not hear the "booming / didgeridoo" noise this morning, but then again it was not raining.

So Happy I Could Drop a Log

The car is back to driving smooth as silk. Differential oil was fine and clean. Flex disks are good. Carrier is good. The "Bull frog" sound was the brakes. They created a harmonic with the pads, rotor and water.... i think. Not sure what else it could be.

Now the happy part. The SLS pump started to leak again. Dang!
I kept my old core and will reseal it. Since I still have some old parts still in the SLS system I want to add a small inline hydraulic fluid filter in the supply line to keep any dirt from reaching the fresh pump.

I mic'd the orings in the pump. The first one (closed to the front cover) is 55mm ID, 2.5mm CS. (Update- the 2mm cs oring left a gap so I used 2.5mm cs.)
The second (pump body OD) is 60mm id x 2mm cs (Update- I did not have a 60mm id oring but the 55mm x 2mm stretched around no problem.) and third (back of housing) is 65mm ID, 2mm CS.

I have a reseal kit that I could never get to work. I can send the rings to you if you want. That pump is a black cloud hovering over me

Black cloud for me too.

Thanks but I will source some out loacally. There is a o-ring company down the road from where I work. I will pick up a dozen each or so.

I am not far from concidering deleting the pump and going with regular shocks. But the ride is sooooo good when it is working right.

Captains Log - That Errant SLS Pump

O-rings are being delivered today and I will be resealing both the pump on the car and my old pump. It is leaking about one liter every two days. Much more than the old pump did.

If these keep developing leaks, i will remove the cam from the pump and reinstall it with a flat (no hole) gasket, remove the supply line to the conrtol valve, replace it with a plug and cap the line. Then use a picture of the pump for target pratice.

There is some good info in on rebuilding the pump in a Youtube Powerpoint video made by El Rojo titled "Rebuilding the Self-Leveling System Pump in a W126 Mercedes". Good luck!

I saw that youtube vid. 2-137 oring is too small. I am glad I mic'd them and got the right ones. The 2-142 is too thick. The rebiult pump I got was not very well done. It only had one new oring (front cover). The other two are old hard and brittle. The new oring looks like it melted. pics comming.

I drove around for 20 mins... No leaks. Lets hope this continues. Now I will reseal my other pump and stick it on the shelf as a spare.

Also put in a new fan clutch.

Now to change to oil. I have Castrol 20w50. I will look for valvoline vr1 next time.

VR1 is great stuff for these cars. Buy it on Amazon, cheapest way.

Thanks Hit Man.

Now if could get it run cooler. No fun driving with the heater on full blast in Summer to keep it cool.

With the heater on and aux fan on it cooles back to 100°C pretty quick even at a crawl in heavy traffic. So it seems the engine can cool but the radiator is just not enough or the temp gauge is reading too high. When it is at 110+°C and I take a reading with the IR temp gun at the t-stat housing I get 90 - 94°C depending where I point it. (temp gun accuracy is +/- 1°C).

Radiator looks pretty new but has some damaged fins. My fin fixer tool does not fit this radiator.

I will check the thermostat to see it was installed with the hole bleed hole blocked.

I love this car, love the ride very much but the heat makes me want to sell it.

Pics of SLS Pump Re-seal

Here are a few pics. I even wore my special outfit.
I have drivien over 500 miles and no signs of leakage. :-)
Be carful not to lose the two pins that hold the band around the body.
They fall out easy.

Running Hot: Resolved

Running the heater resulted in cooler temps. Running the aux fan with a jumper wire did nothing. This points to the radiator as the weak spot. The radiator was replaced by the PO and looked new but obvioussly had clogged tubes.
Put in a new radiator and now it runs at 90°c (avg). At freeway speed it is closer to the 80 mark. The car just feels happier now.

Also added some freon this weeken so the compressor is not working as hard.
I am ready for Summer time.

Update to the first Pump Pic

2 x 65mm was not what I used. I used a Dupont AS568-142 Viton oring.

T-Boned

I have been driving the 560 again for the past two weeks. My 2002 crown vic sport got t-boned (no one got hurt) and is in the shop so my wife is driving the lightning. I could have gotten a rental from the other drivers insurance but decided I would rather just drive the 560 SEL.

Still no SLS pump leaks. But still have that little steering wheel shake at around 65 mph. It started after the first alignment from the local shop and I took it back a few times but they never seemed to get it quite right. So I bit the bullet and made an appointment at Mercedes of Sugarland and requested Paul.
I may have to wait a while but it will be worth it. I am looking forward to it and damn the cost.

That crown vic is pretty tough too. Got t-boned by a new silveradoh and did not do too much damage. Lucky thing I was not driving the 560 that weekend like I usually do.

Don't trust other drivers will see you; they may be texting.

More updates in about one month.

Rich

We went to Mercedes of Sugarland this morning for an alignment.
Paul is awesome. He pointed out all the little things to fix before I should get an alignment and that one tire is not 100% round. It is not an old tire either. Next set will be of a higher speed rating. He did balance the tires though. And that was enough to eliminate the 65 MPH shakes. :-) Still going to fix the little things and bring it back.

What a super clean shop. I love the automatic bay door - It opens so fast and quiet.

Oh - One more thing.
I brought home another stray.

Showroom eye candy.
