Pump relay is between the double firewall area under the hood. You'll see 2 black relays, the one that says "KLIMA" on it isn't the one, it's the other one, it will say a few things on it, "8ZYL" (8 cylinder) and also list an RPM, which is the cut-off rpm speed. Look at the diagram on the relay itself, you need to jump circuits 30 and 87, they are directly across from each other about in the middle.

Today I was able to jump the circuits on the fuel pump relay, and I was able to hear the pump turn on and the fuel bringing pumped. I also attempted to start the car and it did stumble and begin to start. I didn't want to mess anything up, so I turned the ignition off.

I went to the local bone yard to find a used relay, but wasn't successful. I did get the entire box under the car that holds two fuel pumps, and etc. I got those to use as future back up parts.

Thanks to everyone for helping me get this far. I will buy the part on line in the next few days. The best price i found was Rock Auto for $42.

One more question, will the transmission out of a 1991 420 SEL fit in my 1990 560 SEL? The bone yard had one and the car had been t-boned on the passenger side. I even found the receipt where the transmission was serviced a year ago by the infinity dealer.

Yeah I would think that would work OK.

You should at least check to see what the relay cost would be from this site since they have this forum for you to use. If it's a few bucks more you get what's worth more than that, so support it. No financial interest on my part, just sayin'.

Got a used relay off of eBay for $20.00 and the car now runs great. Thanks for all of the help guys.

The brake light on the dash stays on and wondering where to start to investigate the possible problem.

Thumbs up

E-brake depressed or the fluid in the reservoir is probably low. Probably should give it a flush anyway since the car has been sitting

The e-brake pedal may also be sagging from the full-returned position causing the light to stay on.....

Good evening all,

1990 Mercedes 560 SEL 231,000 miles. Been a few months since I replaced the fuel pump relay(used unit ). Moved the car yesterday and parked it. Went back to move the car a day later and no start. I tried jumping the relay for the fuel pumps. Did not make a difference. What else should I check before switching out the fuel pumps. Is there a way to tell if only one pump is back and not the other? I did get the car to start with starting fluid.

Is there a fuse related to the fuel pumps? Which one? I don't have the details sheets inside of my fuse box.

Any information/ suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Ron

Not sure if this affects gas cars as much, but clogged fuel tank screen? Other than that, I'm not sure. Hopefully somebody knows more.

What is your time worth? Labor rates on cars are around $80 - $100 per hour. If you spend twenty hours of your time jerking around trying to find the problem while a trained automotive electrical specialists could find the problem and solve it in two hours or less you have lost approximately $1800. One caveat: make sure the automotive electrical specialist understands mercedes benz automobiles. I used to know one and the guy could decipher german wiring problems within a few minutes; the same problem would take me MONTHS to figure out. He was well worth the $80/hour he charged........back on the road with no worries and now my time is my own.
