To pawoSD

pawoSD: We are both in Michigan. Do you happen to have experience with the 300E 4Matic that would give you an idea of what the heck I am experiencing in the way of shaking/vibration (I would say she's breaking up type vibration) at speeds of greater than 60, where, under that, the car with all of its 251,000 plus miles on it runs as tight and normally as it has always? It seems like it is coming from some deep internal area like the engine, the drive shaft or the wheel base. And, as if I could actually tell, my perception is that it might be the front end, and particularly the passenger side front end / tire.

Would you think that jacking it up and checking the lug nuts might be an obvious first thing to do. Lord, if only it was that simple of a problem I would sleep like a baby tonight. But, I am afraid this is a much more critical and, actually, catastrophic issue. I am so happy to have purchased the 1992 400E with 150,000 miles on it for $250 (even though it needs about $4000 worth of work on non-critical parts, a new radiator, new fan and fan clutch, new rotors (engine) and new brakes....

If you have any feedback or advice whatsoever I would be very grateful and if you could offer me some pertinent counsel, I would gladly treat you to lunch if I am in Grand Rapids area, which I will be at some point in the near future.

Thanks, CJTucker

Thanks pawoSd for the response. I will try these things in the morning and report back. Didn't pay enough attention to the sound of the fuel pump.

Thanks man

I was also told that the transmission was beginning to slip in reverse. The previous owner changed the fluid and filter, and the reverse went out. He also mentioned that the reverse will grab if the car is on the slightest of an incline. Any suggestions?

Strong vibrations above 60 would make me suspect issues with the driveshaft/flex discs firstly. Then suspect items could be wheel balance, a bent rim, damaged tire(s), severe steering alignment issue....

Are the tires in good shape and wearing evenly? (no strange wear on the tread?) Flex discs should not have any cracks in them.

I do not know much about the 4matic system at all. I've looked one over a few times in the junk yard, but have never actually worked on/driven/owned one....they can be problematic.
