follow up - I went back to the auto parts chain store to "advance" my theory. Looked at the filters, and found that rascal, and it was in a "Pure O Later" box. Now I like that firm, they make their own good filters, and they rebrand some MANN filters which I use on my Land Rover (the only vehicle known that can hold its own in an oil leak contest with a W124). So I guess that while we may respect some brands, the bean counterz run everything with sharp pencil focused on costs. Moral - "LISA" (Look InSide Always).

Is the element too tall? It almost looks like it was crushed during install.

With any liquid filter I wet the paper during install to prevent puncture. High initial air flow then a slam of liquid can crush the element. If your oil filter bypass valve is jammed, the delta across the filter will be very high and lead to crushing as well. ( Cold thick oil is the worst )

I think MB was offering elements with better paper to withstand synthetic oil / extended change intervals.
^^ excellent

I learnt that the hard way too - since my experience I always wet the paper element filters with oil then install it. Be it can type or cartidge type.

1) You never clearly said what brand of filter the original/failed filter was. Yes, it was made in China, but what was the name on the box? It sounds like it may have been Purolator, which should have been part # L44757, correct?

2) The OE MB filter is p/n 104-180-01-09, current MSRP is $12, or $8.10 via XXXX. EIGHT DOLLARS for a Genuine Mercedes filter. If you must save a couple bucks, the sponsor of this forum (Pelican Parts) has OEM Hengst, Mann, Knecht, or Mahle for approx $6.50 each.

I just can't fathom why anyone would buy non-OEM filters at the local McParts stores. Buy the OE or OEM, buy 4-6 filters at a time to offset shipping, and when you are down to the last 1 or 2, buy another half-dozen. The funny thing is that many times, the aftermarket Chinese filters cost more than the OE/OEM.

I would imagine they are made with newspapers for filter material. Uro do not have a good repute in anything.

I wouldn't give Uro parts to my worst enemy. That would be cruel and unusual.

I was very disappointed that it didn't go off. Figures, can't trust Uro to do anything right.... sigh.

Puro has two levels of filters, the low end is in a white box and the premium is gold colored. ( from what I recall )

According to their website there may be three levels. The PureOne filters are quite good, but not available for any MB cartridge application. Again, for Mercedes engines, only use OE/OEM. Anything else is asking for trouble.

Purolator actually sells the correct part under another part number - I think listed for the W211. The crappy part actually doesn't fit well on the stalk (flops around), and the big o-ring is undersized in thickness and can cause a leak at the cap.
I notified them like 3 years ago, but to no avail.
