New rotors grinding while turning
Hey guys,
This morning I installed new rotors on my 1995 E320 wagon. Both went on fine and the passenger side is perfect. However now I have a really awful grinding sound when I'm turning left and right. This happens both under braking and NOT under braking. I took it all apart again just to see if I missed anything and I can't find anything out of the norm. Dust shield is out of the way, everything is tight, etc. One thing I DID sort of mess up was one of the spring pins in the hub. I had it lined up with the wrong hole and it pressed it halfway out the back. I pressed it back in to place though and got everything back to normal. Any ideas before I toss the old rotor back on to see if that helps? Last edited by colincoon; 05-12-2013 at 01:46 PM. |

Once my dust shield was hitting the inside of my rim and not the disk. It sounded pretty much the same though.

^I was wondering if that might be it too, but in a straight line all is well. I'm gonna go try and see if I can bend it away really quickly.

Are you sure one of the bake pads is not in backwards.

^Brake pads were not touched so yes.
Just tried to bend the shield out of the way and that didn't really help at all. I also swapped to the old rotor and have the same problem. No vibration under braking. Seems to happen after half a turn of the steering wheel. No sign of rubbing anywhere on anything. I inspected the pads and they look fine, nothing lodged in them or anything. I think I'm going to order a new set of pads and front brake lines this week anyway, so I don't know if either of those will solve it. Most definitely sounds like a rotor scraping though. |

I know it will sound strange, but a if your fan shroud is loose it can come into contact with the fan blade due body roll. It took me awhile to figure that one myself. Jacking up the car one front corner at a time can lead to loosening of the shroud clip allowing for it to slide down just enough, but only when turning.

Check wheel weights for rubbing.

Any areas show signs of rubbing, like shiny areas on the rotor? Seems strange.

I'm wondering if maybe removing the caliper did something odd but driving it 20 or so miles fixed it? No idea, I'll replace the rotor with the new one (again) and see if it goes away. |

Could be the brake caliper mounting bolts are too long rubbing on disc, if you put new ones on

How about the wheel bearing? Jack up the wheel and give a good wiggle to see if there is any play.

What brand of rotors? The Zimmermann z coats will make a noise for a short time.

I've see aftermarket rotors that sit to deep and will scrape on the backing plate on the hub, just did my wife's rear pads and rotors and had this problem!
