190e/W201 Fan Clutch Problems.

Since the summer began, we've been having some slight overheating issues with the '84 190e. I say slight, because it's only in heavy traffic, creeping up to 100 and sometimes slightly above.

I've read on here that others have had similar problems with the fan clutch switch on the thermostat housing. I did the test for the fan clutch switch, jumpering the connector, and the fan clutch still doesn't grab. I don't hear a click or any change at all.

I have two questions for further investigation:

Does the fan clutch have its own relay? If so, where is it located?

I figure that if there is a relay, perhaps power just isn't getting to the fan clutch.

Is there a test I can do for the fan clutch itself? Like hooking it up to a battery. Just to see if it's functioning and if I'm on a wild electrical goose chase.

If I had the money, I'd probably replace everything in line for posterity's sake. But with a few more month's of hot weather, I need this old girl to run cooler for me.

fan clutch? or electromagnetic cooling fan clutch??

84 190E.... is it a eurobenz?? i was thinkin.. good news. the magnet has come down in price. if yours is an electromagnet you can change pumps and fit the slightly newer style of the magnet that does not have extended mounting reach. look them over in your part suppliers web pages. You will see what I mean. then, I find, the UK version of the haynes manual depicts the electrical circuit in a way thats easier to understand. you can request it at the public library. its called HAYNES UK mercedes benz 190, 190E, and 190D (83-93) service and repair manual by spencer drayton and steve rendle ISBN 10:1859604501 or, ISBN 13: 9781859604502 the whole accessory drive, belts, pulleys is different depending on what you are working on. I just received proof that my eurobenz has a 2.0L and all this time I thought it was a 2.3L. I was looking for 4 speed manual trans info. Dr. Sternschnuppe ran my vin and gave me the facts.(benzworld) hope this helps!!!!

I converted mine to an electric fan, I used the wire that powers the electromagnet to trigger a relay for my electric fan.

Wow. Good to see some prompt replies.

I ended up determining that the switch in the thermo housing was bad and wired the fan switch straight to ground. The fan is always engaged, works well. Now that it's winter, it works too well. Takes the car forever to warm up, so time to fix it right.

I just recently bought a 1985 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.3 8V Grey Market with 105k on it. I had it for a week before I had a slight transmission issue where as I had to replace the transmission coolant lines and the transmission filter and gasket because previous owner wasn't very honest (previous vehicle was a 1991 Mazda Miata with 93 Eunos Roadster swap purchased from General David Petraeus, story for another time).

Anyways, I then had the same issue of my '85 Baby Benz slightly starting to reach past the 85 Celsius mark in traffic. So with the hood propped, I noticed that the main cooling fan (large 5 bladed yellowish fan) was running but not so fast as if I would put my hand in it, it would stop. So being unfamiliar with the Mercedes-Benz w201, I had a friend who knows more about them tell me it needs a fan clutch and water pump.

So I ordered aftermarket replacement parts $70 for water pump Autozone, $40 for electromagnetic fan clutch, $25 thermostat, $25 Mercedes Blue Coolant. and $100 to a local mobile mechanic (he told me $100 before looking how long it would take and boy was he pissed when he left 4 hours later).

So all parts installed, found that the factory Engine Cooling Fan Sensor that screws into the side of the water pump, didn't fit the new water pump that did happen to be an exact replacement for the factory one. So now I have to go buy a Engine Cooling Fan Sensor for $35. I guess its better than having blown motor.

My question is, does the Engine Cooling Fan Sensor that screws into the side of the water pump actuate the fant clutch to engage or is there another sensor that actuates it to engage? After installing all these brand new parts, the car ran better, but the main yellowish coloured fan didn't seem to spin at a solid (you don't want to put your hand in there) kind of pace.

My other car (1966 Ford Mustang Fastback with '03 SVT Cobra S/C swap has same issue with water pump, but when water pump replaced, car and fan were fine)

Can you post a picture of the top part of the head where the sensors/switches are located?
There's a simple way to test the aux. and clutch fans.

I don't understand what you mean. The only sensor I know I have to replace as of yet, is located on the side of the water pump.

So I just found out that I might have installed the wrong water pump. My car is a 1985 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.3 8V that was built 08/1985. I purchased a water pump for a 1985 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.3 8V, though the water pump I bought has a m14x1.5 engine coolant temperature sensor on the side of it. The factory water pump has a sensor port that is M18x1.5. I found out the place I bought the water pump from that the 1984 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.3 8V water pump has a sensor port on the side that is M18x1.5.

Will I have problems that I am using a later 1985 water pump on an earlier 1985 Mercedes 190e 2.3? Will the diameter of the sensor make a difference?

The water pump seems to fit perfectly with no leaks what so ever. I am just waiting for my m14x1.5 sensor.
