1983 280ce ...question on cooling system
I just picked up a euro 280ce this past weekend w/a 5spd manual. It seems to be a very well kept car and is in very good shape. Mileage is 145,xxx - unfortunately I don't have any records. Drove it down from SF to LA and it did fine; only thing was I had to replace the thermostat which appeared stuck. During the drive down, it stayed between 80* and 100*; even idling in traffic in Santa Barbara for about an hour.
Today driving it in the North LA mountains the temp went upto 110*...it did eventually come down to 100* and I let it run for a while at the cooler temp before finally shutting it off. I had a electric fan installed in my last euro 300d, and it worked very well. Has anyone got rid of the fan clutch and gone with an electric fan? Also, is there another radiator setup that might be more efficient for this car (like the 617 turbo diesel setup which I believe is also used on the larger capacity gasser w126 cars)? Many thanks.

IIRC my 280e euro used a 240d radiator or equal. So a 300d NA is bigger and a 300 turbo rad is also bigger. The rad may just need cleaned though. Have you looked at the tubes through the fill opening? I think I still have an excellent 240 rad lying about if you decide you need one.

Thanks Tom - I will let you know. Likely I will also buy your PP & clutch at some point.
