1987 300 sdl at 120c

my wife called and said the car got to 120c, is it shot?

they stopped and are letting it cool, they are going to add water and try to drive it home.

good item?

Don't drive it until you diagnose and fix exactly whats wrong. Tow it home or to a mechanic.

If it got to 120C, then its in no condition for: "try to drive home" It needs to remain OFF and the problem diagnosed. If you are lucky it may have survived.

#14 heads are notorious for cracking. I wouldn't be surprised if it's cracked at worst and warped at minimum. Driving it home is a bad idea. Get it home and start examining the engine to see if it is toast.

If it is "close" to home, I think they could drive it safely.

They would have to let it cool off completely, then drive it ONLY until it hits approx 105deg. Then they need to immediately shut it off (stop for lunch, etc) and wait an hour before driving it again.

It's easier to tow it, but if they are a reasonable distance from home, they can do it without causing much further damage. I say this, because if the head is already cracked it isn't going to get any "more cracked"
