Looking at '95 E320
Hi all,
I usually haunt the diesel forums while working on my '87 300D. I was hoping to get a little input from this side of the forum on a gasser that I'm looking at. I found a '95 E320 convertible with 78k miles on it. I'm just curious if there's any general information about common problems with the engines or anything else on this model. How about the convertible roof - is that going to be a problem? Thanks much for any help!

You might try W124 forums on benzworld and mbworld. Not a common model and usually sells at a premium.

Engine wiring harness failure is more of a when than an if so evidence of a later harness is a plus. Head gasket failure also seems to be more of a when than an if. MB updated the head gasket a few times so stick with a MB brand head gasket to reduce the chance of having to replace the head gasket yet again.

i just got a 94 cab with 80k for 3200. needs an alternator, a front drivers seat and top cylinders... that will set me back 800/// if it needs a head gasket...so be it... i can deal with the 1800 cost when needed.....
alternator is on order... found seats from a forum member.. and i will pull the cylinders and have them re-done... \\ once i get it running the way i want.. i will change all fluids... i don't think you can go wrong if you get it for the right price and are willing to do some work on your own. cost prohibitive if you can't

i am .... everthing just bolts and unbolts.... very few electronics to fail... parts are inexpensive and the cars are easy to repair. plus 2000-2010 were some crappy years with some crappy cars..

Hi BC - I had a '94 E320 wagon and I think they have the same engine - inline 6 with 24 valves? From my memory: the fan clutch goes at about 200,000, the head gasket was replaced in the wagon 3 times over the course of 308,000 miles - the OVP relay will also fail on you - and somebody already mentioned the wiring harness issues. The only reason I got rid of the wagon was the transmission blew - the enigine was still strong at 308,000 and could have probably gone another 200,000 miles.

I have a few of the older mercedes benz none newer than 95 diesels, gas 6, 8, 5 cylinder my friend who owns a repair shop often teases me about the age of my cars , I had an 88 300se on the hoist for an inspection which are quite vigorous here in Nova Scotia all it required was a single light bulb , on the hoist next to my car was a 2004 320clk which was getting about 4000.00 in repairs. these cars will give you plenty of years of service simple to work on the hardest part is finding somewhere to get them worked on that know about the cars and also know you are not a milloinare because it is a MB. Honestly they are the best cars MB made and anyone whos know cars will tell you the same.

I'm going to put a new Tranny in my 95 e320. Yes the tranny blew and yes the used tranny I put in lost reverse in 5 days. I still think the wagon is worth it, even with the 22 mpg
also the fan bearing bracket does go at exactly 200k. Its not a bad repair..don't put a Uro bracket in it.

I think the repair focus just shifts. My W210 was the most reliable MB i owned (from 90k to 165k), as far as engine and tranny. It did dump a rear window motor, though, which was a pain to troubleshoot because of the CAN network. Also a self-dimming mirror and a door lock vacuum actuator. The AC compressor was giving up the ghost when I sold it at 14 years old.
