I have a 300se 1991 with 214,000 kms and I was told the transmission was bad and needed to be rebuilt for 5000.00 it all the sudden lost both forward and reverse gears ,what is the first thing I should do to check it out and will the transmission from a 95 e320 fit into the 300se thanks

These transmissions are easy to rebuild. The seals are just shot, and some clutches. Five thousand is a bit steep...
Lots of data here to do it your self. If you do not know how to diy or afraid. I'd buy one from one of these guys as they are the best, and cheap...

I would look for a good used one in the junkyard. Idk about up there but a used trans that has relatively low miles can be had for a few hundred bucks, and another few hundred to have it installed.

With a 91 300se it's likely that many, many w124's will have the trans you need. There is a part # on the trans you will want to match up.

I consider myself an avid diyer but rebuilding an auto trans requires a lot of specialty tools and a level of precision that a lot of people (myself included) don't have. The cost of parts for a proper rebuild from what I have read in the past is nearly 1 k.

The price of the tools to rebuild that unit is $1000? Maybe if you buy OEM MB units. There are plenty of aftermarket units that work fine, biggest issue will be compressing the springs to remove the clutch piston so you can replace the lip seals and orings. The rebuild kit itself will be between $200-400, depending on what all you need.

Hell, a friendly local shop may compress the stuff with their tool for a modest fee.

I have no idea where you can have a trans removed and installed for $200 anymore. That barely covers two hours of labor here in Texas. I can assure you it takes more than to hours to drop a trans.



Either way, $5000 is comical for a reman unit. Last I heard a MB reman unit was about $2300.

I said a few hours. Just FYI: couple is two, a few is 3 or more.

You can buy a used trans for about $300 give or take and have it installed for another $300 or so.

I totally understand the fear and unknown part of the process...It is also falacy of the tools costing many dollars...Only five special tools are needed. The rest are sockets. Torque wrenches

A)Depth vernier caliper to read in MM and inch. The standard size will work, but a 10" one will be best

B)large feeler gauge

c)small PIC set.

D)few large bolts and small blocks of wood

E)3" PVC drain coupling(see the link below how all is used. You will use this on four clutch packs.This is how to fix reverse seal which is the small seal)

For reverse, you need to open it up, and it is up near the front, but the forward gears YOU may have a chance with the valve body, B1 and B2 piston.

Most transmissions in the junk yards(at lease on the WEST) have reverse issues. Look at this thread as I just have said all of this . I have the service manuals to this tranny if you need them, just PM me as they are to large to post. We can exchange emails. I also have hundreds of photos of each rebuild I do I can email you a packet, so you get the feel of what it takes.If it something you are willing to do, walk away from?

A rebuild kit for this is at $180 all day with all clutches. I'd recommend changing a few other parts, B2 piston, some big washers, and plastic parts.

When you say you lost all forward gears? all of them? or first or second will not engage? look at the troubleshooting section of this thread

It is not magic....it is a bunch of seals and clutches that go bad on the 722.3-722.5. The 722.6 is a different animal as that one get expensive to fix, but quicker to rebuild in time.

Lastly, I have a transmission jack that is worth its money in gold, and it is 80USD...

B1 piston is the hard to remove and install, and I made my own tool with a electrical plate and metric bolt...

The rest requires patience and accountability(physical and mental). Walk away when you feel pressure in your daily life.
