1986 300sl won't stay running
Hi,I wrote earlier thinking that I had a fuel pump issue from the car not starting when up a hill. This happened the other day and then it started and ran on level ground. I put $25 of gas in it and drove it home and parked it in the garage. I went to start it this morning and it runs for about three seconds and quits. Also I noticed the last time I was driving it it smelled like it was running really rich and stumbling a little. It has a M-103 engine. Please help. Greg.

WOW you don't give your location but never seen a 107 with a 103 in it.
Few initial thought are to check the OVP fuse and the air flow meter plate to see if it is stuck, just a few random free things to check. You could pull a few plugs to see if they look wet or fouled (or if they are dry might be a clue). Could be the fuel pump relay, you can jump the relay to see if that makes it start. Could be a broken rotor bracket I suppose, seen that before.

Thanks for the reply. I'm in Fl. and was told my 300SL is kinda rare. It's a euro car with the narrow trim. Anyway it used to have the euro headlights before I got it that were vacuum assisted and I noticed an unconnected vacuum hose going to where I think it was. I blocked it off and it started up and ran I thought that was the problem but then I tried with the hose not blocked but it still ran. I did push down on the plenum diaphram before I messed with the vacuum line so maybe it was slightly stuck. I also noticed that the transmission is hard hitting when changing gears. The line coming from the trans.modulator goes to a valve or relay of some type on the driver's side fender. I pulled the hose off of it while the car was running but it didn't seem to have vacuum. It has a switch by the shifter for economy or standard shifting, maybe that's what that's for. I'll connect the tranny hose to a different location and see if it shifts easier. Thanks again.Greg.

Greg, yes if you don't have vacuum going to the modulator it will definitely shift hard.
You don't say where you pulled the vacuum line off, like coming from the engine or after that valve? You should at least have vacuum going to that valve, i am not sure what it's for either to be honest. Do you see anything going to the valve that would control it? For the time being I would just make sure you get vacuum going direct from a vacuum source to the modulator, that can't be good for the trans.

gilly--I worked on 1 107/300sl in va beach. that lighter motor made for a real nice driving car. not the 450/560 sleds they sold here. good luck, chuck. |
