300 E CARBURATOR CONVERSION
Dear Srs,
I have a lot of trouble with the fuel pumps in my 300e 1990 w124, to the point of seeking for alternatives. Is it possible to adapt a regular (low pressure) electric fuel pump in place of the super complex high pressure 2 pump system, and a two barrel carburetor on top of the intake manifold?, has anybody tried it? Any advice will be welcome, I know it might sound crazy, but here in Nuevo Laredo there is not any Mercedes Benz qualified mechanic, in fact there is not any qualified mechanic. thanks |

Converting an M103 engine to carb would be a monumental task and I bet it would not even run properly or would get horrendous mpg's. I would not bother. Unlike the Earlier M110 engine it was never designed or intended to be used with a carb.
The stock fuel system is not all that complex, its just touchy. On the 300E the fuel pumps are hardly ever the problem with a poor or non running engine. Another alternative would be to find a diesel engine to stick in there, like an OM602 or 603 Or if you want carb I think there was a rare version of the M102 engine that was carb....way more trouble than its worth though. I'd go diesel.

Any advice? If you cannot or do not perform your own work, then based upon the above, get another car brand your locals CAN work on. IF you do your own work, find out the root cause of the fuel pump issue. Fuel pumps are not a typical problem area. They do weaken with age, but they rarely have problems. They work or they don't. Are you replacing the pumps? New or used? Same symptom or different problems? Whatever the problems you have now, what you propse is an order of magnitude more troublesome. Jim
