92 300TE 4Matic Windshield Wiper

Driving during a severe storm threat today things let up for awhile. When I slowed my windshield wiper speed something happened and all of a sudden the wiper, she only has the one - centered, started touching a little above the top of the windshield and a lot under the passenger side piece molding.

The noise drove me crazy enough that I eventually stopped and put in a smaller sized wiper just to end the flopping noise of rubbing against that side molding.

Then the wipers stopped functioning all together about mid way of the windshield. Not even a ghost of an attempt to spray windshield washing fluid!

Needless to say I made it home, the last five or so miles, without any windshield wipers. My assumption, Lord I despise that word, is that I have blown a fuse. However it is pouring outside so I am not in the correct temperament to check fuses at the moment.

Any known history with this type of thing happening? Where should I begin my diagnostic/repair journey?

Thanks,
Dave H...

I Punted.....

....on mine and just today bot a brand new one.

I pulled a used one off some car in a yard recently and have it sitting on my workbench, but for the $100 cost of the new one.....mine was original & I'm guessing yours is too....I just decided from a safety standpoint a new one was worth $100. PM me & I'll tell you where I bot it. P.S. My daughters lives in Greenville & I heard about the intensity of your storms.

If the wiper is stuck extended out then likely the internal mechanism that extends/retracts the wiper blade is seized or binding. Pretty common if it hasn't been serviced. The grease gets hard and and causes all kinds of problems, especially to the plastic gear. Best bet would be to remove the mono wiper assembly and clean the mechanism and grease/lubricate it.

Look in the forum DIY section for info on how to dis-assembled and service the wiper mechanism.

hello,

check out the following excellent thread:

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/restoration-projects-long-term-builds/341121-achtung-das-schweinhund-baby-benz-thread-38.html

monowiper info starts from post #570.

my 2cents:

i managed to do the job without the puller, used a wooden block and hammer instead.

and like stretch mentions in the thread, make sure you dont lose the metal shims, they are super thin and can easily wind up getting lost if you are not careful.

Ps. i did this job over the summer, and still have a pretty good idea how it went, so if you have any trouble removing the wiper feel free to PM me.

good luck
